Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Altus H. Jewel [WIA Fredericksburg, Va., May 3, 1863], Co. E, 77th New York Vols., White Oak Church, Va., Mar. 7, 1863, in part: "…the box you sent came to light yesterday…we were surprised when we came to open it…some of the boxes were entirely spoiled…they were all opened at headquarters to be examined. They were looking for liquor & citizens clothes. They opened one sent to Ed McPherson, [POW Fredericksburg, Va., 5/03/63, eventually succeeded in deserting 7/30/63 at Albany, N. Y.] a pioneer of Co. D…they found a citizens suit of clothes, citizens pass & a letter stating that they had sent him all he wrote for. He was arrested & put under guard…the general telegraphed to have his folks arrested…his intentions were to desert…I saw mules enough to do all your spring work…passed a drove of two or three hundred…to put into the supply trains. The telegraph from Belle Plain to Hooker's Headquarters passes within four rods of our camp…about twice or three times a week the ballon goes up from Hooker's Headquarters…I have got an open faced escarpment watch that cost me one dollar. The boys in the Company got up a raffle. They wanted me to go in for it. I told them that I had not got the money & they said that did not make any difference. They would wait until payday, but I had the money. I…worn the watch the first chance that I get. I will send it to Sarah…direct…to Altus H. Jewel, Co. E, 77 Regiment. N. Y. S.
