Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Altus H. Jewel [WIA Fredericksburg, Va., May 3, 1863], Co. E, 77th New York Vols., Stafford County, Va., Mar. 10, 1863, in part: "…part of the Regt. went out on picket this morning. It took the next man to me to fill out the detail, but I was luck and escaped it. The picket line is about two miles from here. It is in King George County & the camp is in Stafford County. Bill & John went so that I am keeping old Maids Hall now. The two deterrers that they caught from our company have been court marshaled and sentenced. James Dorley [eventually KIA Spotsylvania C. H., Va., 5/12/64] the old recruit is to have one side of his head shaved and be drummed the length of the Regt. and back, have a chain & ball attached to his leg and be sent to the Rip Rap or some other public Rorks and to service out the three years with one half of his pay stopped & in the end be dishonorably discharged. Michael McDade, [DOD, White Oak Church, 3/01/63] the new recruit, that came down with us [is] to be put to hard labor at the public Rorks…ten dollars of each month's pay to be taken from him [and] to be kept on bread & water seven days…and at the expiration of the three years dishonorably discharged with the letter D branded on his back. I have made up my mind to not desert…I would not like to be branded…I could stand the rest…it ha been reported…that there were to be thirty…deserters shot…about the furloughs. They are granted to those that started with the regiment & have not been home. They give one man from each company at a time, two lone officers and one staff officer. They give them ten days furloughs…Charley Sexton…had a felon corn on his finger…and has not got back yet…Captain [Seth W.] Deyoe [WIA Spotsylvania C. H., Va., 5/10/64] went the second time & Capt. [Orrin P.] Rugg [Co. G, Spotsylvania C. H., Va., 5/12/64] next time…from Dixie Land and the Yellow Gals…". The original transmittal cover is included. With fully detailed transcription. VG.
