Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Altus H. Jewel [WIA Fredericksburg, Va., May 3, 1863], Co. E, 77th New York Vols., "Stafford County, Va., Mar. 12, 1863, 77 Regt. N. Y. S. Volunteers, Lieut. Col. W. B. French commanding Regt., Army of the Potomac, Sixth Corps, Third Brigade, Second Division, Gen. Hooker commanding," in part: "…there were a reconnoitering party of 1300…went out. They took a boat at Belle Plain and went down the Potomac to Houland Co. There they…captured two thousand bushels of corn, a large quantity of wheat, 150 horse and mules, 50 Negroes & a few reb prisoners. They run into a large rebel force, enough to have taken them prisoners, but the rebs…skedaddle back to their holes…I am going to send the watch that I wore…I broke the crystal…and one hand. George may get it fixed for me…it is no use to me here…you spoke about lice. We could not get along without them. They make us itch and it is a pleasure to scratch and it is a pastime to search our clothes for them…this is from your brother. I had a letter from…Martha Jewel a few days ago."
