Union soldier's Gettysburg Campaign letter, 3pp. 4to., written by Pvt. Altus H. Jewel [WIA Fredericksburg, Va., May 3, 1863], Co. E, 77th New York Vols., "In camp near Brisco Station on the Orange and Alexandria Rail Road between Bull Run Battleground and Catlett Station, [Va.], June 25, 1863," in part: "…we were at Fairfax Courthouse…we left there and proceeded to Centreville and from there…by the old Bull Run Battleground to Brisco Station…we did not see all of the battleground, but what we did see was…a large field and every little rise of ground had a large fort on it…some fifteen or twenty in number. They were strong enough to resist most any force. We saw the remains of a train of cars that the Rebels [Stonewall Jackson's men] captured and burnt…the wheels stood there on the track just as they stood before they were burned. I do not know the object…in sending us here. We do not connect with any part of the army…all there is of us is…Howe's Division. We…keep a picket line all around us…we were sent here to keep the rebels outing not let them destroy the Rail Road. Last Sunday there were heavy artillery firing off…at Manassas Gap…our forces captured 1000 of Stewart's [JEB Stuart's] Cavalry…time passes very dull…since we came here…A. H. Jewel." With fully detailed transcription. Minor toning, else VG
