Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Corp. Altus H. Jewel [WIA Fredericksburg, Va., May 3, 1863], Co. E, 77th New York Vols., "Waterloo, Va., Sept. 2,1863," to his sister, in part: "…day before yesterday we had an order read to us…that…there was a movement on the left of our lines & that General Meade requested those doing picket duty…do their duty manfully…keep a good lookout & stand in readiness…we…suppose it to be a scouting party sent…to find out the position of the rebels…there is no signs of the rebels…in front of us. There was a show…I did not go to se them perform. It was a free show. The performance was composed of climbing greased…poles with a 5 dollar green back on top…20 ft. high…there was two poles…they had foot races…besides a greased hog. The one that held [onto] it got five dollars. It [the show] was made up by officers. It [the show] was made up by [the] officers. There was one major general & one brigadier [general] at the show. Anyone could try the poles or catch the hog…an old man over fifty out-jumped the whole of them. The officers were most all drunk…I am bound to shoot every man that I can that is trying to break up this government…Altus H. Jewel…". With fully detailed transcription. VG
