Union soldier's letter, 6pp. 8vo., written, on patriotic pre-printed Union song sheets each entitled, "Song of the American Girl" and "Fraternity" by Corp. Altus H. Jewel [WIA Fredericksburg, Va., May 3, 1863], Co. E, 77th New York Vols., Warrenton, Va., Nov. 3 & Nov.11,1863, in part: "…I went to work laying up my tent…we had to police around camp…cut bushes and clean up the chips…this day has been a lively day…as today is election [day]…the cars ran through here to Warrenton…for the first time. The rebels in their retreat made a clean sweep of the Rail-road. They torn up the rails, ties…dug up the sluce ways & dug down the grade spots. The ties & rails they piled up together & set afire to bend…the rails and spoil them…[Brandy Station, Va., Nov. 11, 1863]…we are now encamped near Brandy Station…I will send 15 dollars this time.
