Most likely war-date clipped signature "Very Truly, John A. Griswold" (1818-1872) politician, business owner and philanthropist who early in the war Griswold built, at his own expense, the iron-clad USS Monitor. The Monitor was expressly designed to combat the converted Confederate Merrimac. He was later involved in the production of other iron-clads including the Dictator, Catskill, Lehigh, Montauk, Passaic, Patapsco, Puritan and Sangamon. He also helped raise four Union volunteer regiments and for his efforts the 21st New York Cavalry was named the "Griswold Light Cavalry" in his honor. He was elected to the U. S.
