A great collection of six (6) war-date postal transmittal covers addressed in the hand of Union Brigadier General Nathaniel McLean, all but one as colonel of the 75th Ohio to his wife. In addition each cover is free franked by McLean. The usual franking reads: "Soldier's Letter. N. C. McLean, Col. 75th Regt. O. V. I." while one pre-printed "headquarters first Division, Eleventh Corps, Army of the Potomac" is franked: "Soldiers Letter. N. C. McLean, Brig. Gen." NATHANIEL COLLINS MCLEAN (1815-1905) was the son of associate Supreme Court Justice John McLean. He raised the 75th Ohio at the outbreak of the Civil War and became its first colonel until he was promoted to brigadier general in late September 1862. He led his troops faithfully, but had the bad luck to be in command of the Army of the Potomac's exposed flank at Chancellorsville and after the disastrous battle was shipped west holding only minor positions until the end of the war at which time he helped Sherman march through the Carolinas. Expected wear with some soiling, else VG (6 pieces.)
