A historically significant, and possibly unique, Union draft call broadside extra drafting slaves into United States military service. In our nearly twenty five years in business this is a first for us. We have never had the honor to offer to the public a draft call broadside in which slaves are called to United States military service. Although, Lincoln abolished slavery in 1863 only those affected were beyond the reach of Federal authority and were in "states in rebellion". As the war dragged on more and more men were needed to help replenish Grant and Sherman's depleted ranks. In less than a month before the 1864 presidential campaign Lincoln was again forced to ask the men of the north to come forward and help him met his goal in help free the south's black population from slavery. The document we offer here is from the border state of Kentucky, and since Kentucky was not a state in rebellion her slave men could be asked to help fight for their race's freedom. Among the four columns of names can be found dozens of Harrison County's slaves population including the names of their masters who most certainly had more than enough money to pay the 300.00 exemption fee. Also, many of that county's freemen of color, denoted in most cases by (f. c.) after that man's name were expected to do their part in Lincoln's holy cause. Unpublished broadside, measuring approximately 5" x 14 1/2", boldly announcing: "EXTRA! Covington, Ky., Oct. 19th, 1864. DRAFT for Harrison County. This morning…the Draft to fill the deficiency of Harrison County, under the call for 500,000 troops, was made at the Provost Marshal's office…with the following result. Original Draft-100 Per Cent For Exemptions." Examples of the names of the men unfortunate enough to be called include, in very small part: "…Francis, (owned by Wash Bruce)…Wesley, (owned by Chas Ford)…Hice, (owned by N. D. Moore, Adm'r of Dr. J. H. Moore)…Francis Mayberry, (free colored)…Turner Clark, (f. c.)…". A true piece of American history. Mounted on a larger scrap book page. Soiling with some paper loss, else VG.
