A good pair of Union brevet Brigadier General items for brevet Brigadier General John Cunningham Kelton (1828-1893) graduate USMA 1851 upon graduating he served in the northwest frontier. Then in the United States Army Adjutant General's Department. On the outbreak of war in 1861, he was commissioned colonel of the 9th Missouri Infantry. After the war he became adjutant general of the United States Army and retired as full brigadier general in 1892. After his retirement he was appointed governor of the Old Soldier's Home, Washington. The clipped signature, reads, in full "J. C. Kelton, Lt. Col. Asst. Adj. & Genl. Bvt. Brig. General, U. S. A." The cabinet card shows Kelton with hand in coat by Handy, Washington. Both fine.
