TOWNSEND, Edward Davis (1817-1893) Assistant Adjutant General during the Civil War. He was a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy (1837) and served in the Florida War as a Lt. Col. In 1861 he was promoted to Colonel. From Nov. 1861 to March 1862 he served in the Adj. Gen.'s Office. He was promoted to Acting Adj. Gen. of the Army on March 23, 1862. He retired in 1880. War-date Special Orders No. 13, signed “E.D. Townsend” 1pp. quarto, War Department, Washington, January 9, 1864, and reads “By direction of the President of the United States, a Court of Inquiry is hereby appointed...to investigate the conduct of Major-Generals A. McD McCook, T.L. Crittenden, and James S. Negley...at the battle of Chickamauga and in leaving the field...” Detailing for the Court Generals Hunter, Cadwallader and Wadsworth. Fine condition.
