A great war-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Farmer E. Shaw (1844-1923), Co. F, 4th Minnesota Vols., [n. p., but Kinston, Ga.], July 6, 1864, in part: "…we are guarding the railroad. We left Huntsville June the 22. We thought we was a goin to the front but I don't think that we are needed there. I never caw as meny wounded men at one place as I have saw…I heard last night that Atlanta was taken…we are thirty miles from there. they had a hard fight there the 2 and took between 5 and 6 thousand…they will be in here tonight at 5 o'clock. You said that Henry Edwards was in the 6 Wis. battery. They are in our brigade. They are about one mile from here…we are all a goin to have hard times for the next year for I don't think that there will be much raised to feed the army…altho I hope that the war wont last that long…it has been a going on about long enough to come to a close and the sooner the better for both sides. The people are awful hard up here. There is nobody left but the women to work for themselves and they pick blackberries and fetch them 11 miles to get something to eat…their damned yellow backed husbands are in the Rebel army. I heard that Charles Stourt was married…he is at Saint Paul, Minnesota…Farmer E. Shaw." Most of Shaw's phonetic spelling has been corrected. VG
