A great Civil War naval officer's signature, "Lieut. Commander Pierre Giraud, R. U. S. Navy, 'Mobile' August 5th 1864." The greatest day of his navy career occurred on that date during the battle of Mobile Bay, Alabama. There Union Admiral David Farragut sent Giraud abroad the disabled Confederate ironclad CSS Tennessee to accept Confederate Admiral Buchanan's sword. At that time he was serving aboard the USS Ossipee as volunteer officer. His military career began in August 1861 as a volunteer officer. Before that he served as part of the Southern Atlantic Blockade Squadron, aboard the USS Montauk, when it encountered the CSS Nashville. At that time, he was commanding the guns that destroyed the Confederate vessel. He then joined the crew of the USS Ossipee and found himself in the Battle of Mobile Bay, where he boarded the crippled CSS Tennessee, which was later refitted and given to Giraud to command. Also, included are the signatures of "John D. Hopkins, Georgia, 13th July 1870" and Ben. E. Gritting, Washington City." Overall VG
