MEADE, George Gordon(1815–1872) was a career United States Army officer and civil engineer best known for defeating Confederate General Robert E. Lee at the Battle of Gettysburg in the American Civil War. He previously fought with distinction in the Second Seminole War and the Mexican–American War. During the Civil War, he served as a Union general, rising from command of a brigade to command of the Army of the Potomac.War-date Union Document Signed by C.A. Dana, Assistant Secretary of War, Washington D.C., January 13, 1865, being a pass for William Miller to City Point, Virginia. Note on verso in pencil, “Mr. Miller is authorized to take with him the necessary materials to make him to exercise his act...Geo. G. Meade Maj. Genl.” Fine condition.
