A great, ca. 1865, medical Civil War CDV of wounded Union casualty Joseph Brown, naked from the waist down, with two nasty holes through his upper left thigh. A period inscription on the verso indicates that this image was used as a medical reference for wounds to the femur. An inscription on the verso reads, in full: "Joseph Brown, 1192, XII A. B. d. 14 Surg. P. 6 110 Excis. Femur." There were 73 documented cases of excisions to upper femur performed during the war; of these only twenty-five survived the surgery. Worthy of further research to uncover the entire story of this unfortunate victim. Uncommon in the marketplace. This medical image would be a great addition to any Civil War collection. Toned, with chips to lower mount, not affecting the albumen, else VG
