Manuscript sermon and historical writings by Archibald Kenyon on the Lincoln assassination, slavery, the Civil War, etc. Sixty three manuscript pages. 8vo, green calf leather, wear at spine, front hinge split, a few leaves torn, bold dark ink, else fine. Years 1854-65. This volume is signed "A. Kenyon", and was most likely by the Rev. Archibald Kenyon, an outspoken anti-slavery Baptist minister and prolific hymn writer. He was in Chicago when this volume was started in 1854. By 1865, he had moved on to another congregation, possibly Peoria. In the middle of this volume he notes "The following sermon was preached just after the death of Mr. Lincoln." In the 32-page sermon which follows, he calls the assassination "an event without parallel in the world history" and places blame for the calamity: "Slavery has murdered Abraham Lincoln, & a great mourning clothes with its somber colors the inhabitants & drapes with emblems of deepest sorrow....". Kenyon also writes: "The crime of J. Wilkes Booth will star upon the pages of human history without parallel"...."We are today a Nation of mourners. A great oppressive sorrow crushes the vast millions of our population - a great man has fallen..."...."Mr. Lincoln was hailed as the great champion and was nominated and elected as the exponent of that particular policy - As the result of the Lincoln election with such a policy - the slave holding state proposed the act of seccession..."...."The President, strongly conservative - sought to overturn the Rebellion and bestow peace without disturbing slavery in the states - But turn which every way he would - the enevitable question met him. It was both the cause and the efficient means of sustaining the war policy of the south....". More amazing content includes Lee's surrender, the Emancipation Proclamation, Lincoln and more slavery issues, etc. An amazing record of one of the darkest periods in our nations history.
