A rare United States military document, being a retained copy, 1p. 4to., written to Artillery Corps Col. George Bomford, [Ordnance Department, Washington], Feb. 13, 1837, concerning fear of Indian uprisings during the Second Seminole War, reading, in part: "An estimate of Funds required to carry on the operations at this arsenal…was transmitted to your office…I find the amount of the materials now on hand for the erection of the Magazine were inadvertently omitted…from the sum required for that building…I forward herewith another Estimate…which includes $250 more…on account of Preventing and suppressing Indian Hostilities, as the Requisition for Buckshot Cartridges…renders it necessary to employ a greater number of hands than was contemplated…this description of cartridges being so difficult to fabricate that it requires 9 men to make and pack 2000 per diem. The casting of buckshot is also expensive; there being one set of serviceable moulds. I am obliged to keep this operation on without intersession, Sundays not excepted, to make a sufficient supply of shot for he cartridges…the erection of the magazine has been commenced and…will be nearly complete this month."
