A good United States military document, 7pp. 4to., written by Artillery Corps Lt. Col. George Bomford, Ordnance Department, [Washington], July 3, 1828, addressed to Major Alexander C. W. Fanning as commander of Augusta Arsenal, Georgia, reading, in part: "…this work is now so nearly complete, there is no doubt…of its entire and early completion…you are authorized to exceed accordingly if…may be done with perfect safely to the public interests. Funds will be transmitted in time to meet the payments due on the completion of the contract…your recommendation to discontinue the repair of old arms and to commence overhauling and cleaning the arms…is approved. Any required number of armorers can be sent from Harpers Ferry. But as those men are unused to so warm a climate as Augusta; I suppose that it would be better to defer sending them until October…and then to send a larger number and to keep a strong force at work during the winter and spring…what number…may be employed advantageously; and what supplies…may be necessary…for the use of the armory. I enclose a private copy of regulations respecting small arms…relative to the dimensions of gun boxes; the manner of making them and of packing the arms. The rifle accouterments and sword belts required at Augusta will be forwarded from Philadelphia. The arms in possession of your company may be repaired at the arsenal, or may be turned into store and new arms furnished in their stead. A supply of musket accouterments will be forwarded with the rifle accouterments from which your company may be fully supplied…". Minor toning, else VG
