A very unusual early Arkansas statehood, 3pp. 4to., letter written by William R. Weldon, Elizabeth, Arkansas, March 17, 1849, to A.[braham] Weldon, Fancy Farm, Kentucky, reading, in part: "…"…I had my gallantry tried the other day. There was a young lady coming to school who was modest, handsome & sensible, but had a disease which is very common in Kentucky called the flirts. Miss. Fanny could not be still for a moment. One cold dry day this young lady was standing by the fire. I come very near telling the young lady she would burn, but thought so would flirt away soon but…her dress caught fire and in a moment was in flames. She broke for the door with the blaze higher than her head. What to do I did not know but there was no time to be lost…I was under the painful necessity of stripping her…think of a young man stripping a lady…but as there was no water handy. It was done in a moment. Miss. Fanny made a straight tail for home…William R. Weldon." The integral postmarked transmittal leaf with manuscript canceled "Elizabeth, Ark., March 21" and paid "10" cent postmarks is attached. VG
