A carefree physician's reminiscence letter about killing an "old maid's' cat while rabble-rousing as medical student, 5pp. 4to., on personal medical stationery by, a Chadwick, Illinois' first physician, F. H. Snow, Chadwick, Illinois, Aug. 17, 1898 addressed to his old friend J. H. "George" Monigan, of Elsberry, Missouri, reading, in part: "…20 years ago this fall we had rooms together with those old maids. Do you remember how that one used to hollow when she went into a fit? You could mock her exactly…do you also remember holding the old cat for me when I gave her the hypodermic and how sorry the old maid was next morning when she found her old cat dead and the card we found on the breakfast table previous to our doctoring the cat…oh well, George that was only once in a life time…good, honest, sober…we have only one child, a boy…we went to Independence [Missouri] in 1880…our town is 12 years old and we have between 5 & 600 inhabitants. I have a fair business, make a little more than a living…worth 10,000…I, like yourself carry some life insurance, 4,000 life & 2500 accident…I am having to wear glasses…I will be 45 next February…I don't chew, smoke nor drink, [but] attend church regularly and try to behave myself…I haven't seen any of the college boys either since I graduated…I was in St. Louis at the state Medical Society…in May 1897…our farmers raise corn & oats…now George don't tell your wife anything bad about me. Tell her I would like to get acquainted with her because she is your wife…yours truly and fraternity, F. H. Snow." Expected folds, very minor toning, else VG
