Wonderful portrait photograph and autograph of famous American actor Edwin Forrest by Frederick Gutekunst. Photo measures 15"x18" on 20" x 24" board. F. Gutekunst (Philadelphia) label on verso of photo mount. "Yours sincerely, Edwin Forrest" inscription on 3-1/2" X 2-1/2" lapel tipped to board below photo. "Photographed by F. Gutekunst" also printed on mount below portrait. Gutekunst was possibly the most famous American photographer of his day. His career began in 1856 and grew during the Civil War. His reputation for quality was so great that many distinguished individuals sought him out for their portraits. Edwin Forrest was a prominent 19th century American Shakespearean actor whose feud with British actor William Charles Macready was the cause of the deadly Astor Place Opera House Riot of 1849 in New York City that left at least 25 dead and 120 injured. This portrait was likely made in the late 1860s or early 1870s. Some dampstaining on mount and inscription, but photo in great shape.
