A Southern civilian letter written and signed by William Elliott whose father, William Elliot Sr. was one of the wealthiest planters in South Carolina. In 1860 he owned 12 plantations in the low country and 217 slaves. The single page letter written to Gen. Jas. Simons, Broad Street, with dateline Broad St. 18th June 1860. In full, “ I enclose you a letter to Gov. Gist requesting seventy-five rifles for the Cadet Rifleman. Please read it and see if you will answer. If not, change it for me & I will copy it again. I was flattered by your view of us yesterday afternoon. Will you do me the kindness to let me have a letter from you recommending our application. Do if you know the Governors direction, let me have it.”
