A rare young Southern Belle's take on Lincoln's 1860 presidential campaign election, 4pp. folio, written by a certain "Cousin Joe", White Cottage [located near Cedar Creek], Va. Nov. 9, 1860 to her cousin, reading, in part: "…mother intended going to the Fort today…the election is over and Lincoln is elected. I won one ten dollar [bill] on him any way. Bell & Everett I suppose carries the "Old Dominion." The first time…she has gone Whig since she has been a state and now the democrats are to blame. The idea of having two candidates is the very climax of absurdity. The women could and would have done better. For my part I believe Lincoln will make as good a president as either the "Seceder" or "squatter sovereign onigantor" and by the way Lincoln is a democrat too. A pretty "Mess of them truly." I wouldn't belong to such a party. Here is papa a great Douglasite, went to the polls and didn't vote…poor Douglas got one vote at Newtown, one at Middletown and at Russels…one at Cross Roads and only 60 in the Town of Winchester. But little excitement prevailing at C. C. [Cedar Creek] in regard to the election, less than has ever been known here during a presidential campaign. Tonight Rev. George Harris [Chaplain George W. Harris, 8th Virginia Infantry WIA Gaines Mill, Va. 6/27/62] commences a big meeting in the Baptist Church. I fear the rain will prevent him coming…the creek has been very high and has done a great deal of damage to the farmers along the banks. It carries off a quantity of corn for Jno Hancock and others…I also met Mr. James Barr. [24th Virginia Battalion Part. Cavalry] I think him a very sensible man, though not much adapted joking I imagine…they tell me Va. and Maryland has gone for Breckinridge. Good news to you I suppose. Douglas carries Missouri& Lincoln all the Northern states and is elected by some 15 electoral votes…I am Post Mistress, [?], at Cedar Creek…Cousin [Josephine.] Very light toning, else VG
