LONGSTREET, James (1821 - 1904) Confederate major general who commanded Lee's right wing at Antietam, and the left flank at Chickamauga. Longstreet has been accused of delaying his attack at Gettysburg, leading to the Confederate defeat there. Longstreet is responding to a letter written to him on the obverse which reads in part, “Gordon Va., Aprl 2nd, 1864, Lt. Gen’l Longstreet, The undersigned members of men appointed by the county court of Washington ... wait on you Gen’l on the important question of supplies & substance for the army under your command ... & desire that some good to the public, the people & the army would probably result from such a friendly conference. We are here now for the purpose and will be pleased to learn at what hour it will suit ...” That letter is signed by three men of the committee. This is followed by an unsigned note in part, “The note of the committee was sent to Gen’l L on the morning of the 2nd by courier, the verbal reply by the bearer was that ‘he could not answer this’. We waited till next evening without having anything further . it was then determined that Mr. Hauses should without further delay wait on Gen’l L & he did so. the result was that nothing could be done by Gen’l Longstreet for the relief of the troops.” The Longstreet response is on the obverse of that committee letter. May I ask that you will confer with Major Moses and Major Edwards of the subsistence Department upon the matter of your communication. They are more familiar with the wants of the army in their department than I am and have better means of being advised of the details of the resources of the county and the wants of the good citizens. I am gentlemen very respectfully ...”
