Good Union soldier’s four page letter on patriotic letterhead, written by “Albert” (F. Sharp) who enlisted 8/29/1861 into Company G, CT 10th Infantry and died of his wounds, 8/18/1864, suffered at Deep Bottom Run, datelined Camp Wells, Washington, June 4/61. In part, “Orders are so frequently countermanded, we have given up all hope of knowing what disposition Gen. Scott will make of us.... Last night an Army of Union men from Wheeling Va. surprised a Rebel camp at Grafton which was a triumphant success. The Union men took possession of everything. The Rebels alone escaped with their lives. Up to this time our side has known no defeat, Thank God. ... The woods of Virginia are full of fragrant flowers, as also the D.C.. Prominent among these is the magnolia ...”
