Pair of war-date Union soldier’s Autograph Letters Signed, includes: ALS by Colonel William C. Cooper, 142nd Ohio Infantry, 3pp. octavo, pencil, Martinsburg, Virginia, May 17, 1864, and reads in part: “...We have been on the road since Saturday but have only reached this point waiting for the repair of bridges which have all been washed away by the high waters. We are informed that the bridge at Harpers Ferry is gone. We have not yet seen a single newspaper or news of any kind. I would be truly glad to learn from the great battles before Richmond. We are overwhelmed with rumor as to our prospects and destination. The boys are well in fine spirits...” Fine condition...plus; ALS by Alick Hayward, 24th Mass, 6pp. octavo, Deep Bottom, Virginia, July 16, 1864, with cover, it reads in part: “...been out in the trenches all night. We have been having a very quiet time of it until this morning when a Rebel battery opened on our gunboats and we all took to the bank of the river to witness the engagement. They opened on us...one struck within 50 feet of where I am now writing. The same shot passed through the officers tent in the 10th Conn. Regt. and the one that occupied it had just got off of his bed. If he had been lying there at the time he would have been a dead man. What do you think of the invasion of Maryland and of our friend Charles Sumner coming so near capture....I don’t think that Grant will alow them to make him withdraw from in front of Petersburg. The report that we got through Rebel sources is that Sherman has captured Atlanta. If so he is smart, and has got ahead of the Lieut Genl and Mr. Lincoln. There is no doubt Lincoln has made mistakes but that is expected with any man. I wish that he would turn Welles out of his cabinet and put in a man that has got some spunk. Hope that Abe Lincoln will do the right thing and come out with flying colors...” Fine condition. (2 items)
