War-date Union soldier Autograph Letter Signed by Joseph McGill, 40th Ohio Volunteers, 3-1/2pp. octavo, pencil, June 25, 1862, with cover, it reads in part: “...We can’t get provisions. There is scouts sent out every few days and they fetch in some prisoners every time. There is 30 prisoners fetch in since I came back. There is 734 men in our regiment fit for duty. The sick was put on a flat boat to go down the river. The boat struck a snag and upset and drowned 5 of the sick. There was a great excitement got up in the camp. Word came in that there was 3,000 cavalry comin to take us. The long roll began to beat and then you ought to seen the men skedaddle for their guns and we formed in a line ready for them. The band played Yankee Doodle...” Very good condition.
