A pair of Union soldier’s letters written by “Halsey Bartlett” who enlisted 8/21/1862 into "A" Co. CT 6th Infantry, and was killed on 6/17/1864 at Bermuda Hundred, VA. The first six page letter is datelinedBeaufort SC., Nov. 7th 1862. In part, “There is quite an excitement here in camp about enlisting into the Regular Service ... five of our company gone to the United States Artillery ... and then you know they are enlisting Negroes into the service. There is one Brigade of Negroes encamped here in Beaufort ... I have heard that the Rebel Congress is sitting and that the members have had a fight and six of them were killed. ... If things go on as they do now, Jeff Davis will get assassinated yet, and I hope he will ...” ... plus, Another six page letter written by “Halsey Bartlett”, Hilton head S.C. dec 11/61, Camp Sherman. In part, “We had a funeral here yesterday .. a private .. was found by me in his tent lying on his face ... They have blockaded up Savannah Port by sinking old whale boats filled with stone ... There is no way for the bloody Southerners to get out now. They have surrounded Fort Pulaski and are going to take Savannah City ...” ... plus, two letters to Halsey from his mother.
