A nice war-date Union officer's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by 2nd Lt. Ira F. Gensel, 4th United States Regular Infantry, [MWIA Fredericksburg, Va., 12/13/62 died 12/28/62], "Camp near Roper's Meeting House, James City County, Va., May 12, 1862", in part: "…we remain still in the same camp…in consequence of the retreat of the Rebel Army and for ascertaining where they are going to make a stand…the general halt of the army…has taken place. The…opinion in the army is that the Rebels army is about used up…my opinion…by the first of July the war will be over. I find much to amuse me in the conduct of the women in this part of the "Old Dominion." Along our route of march this side of Williamsburg the ladies still remain in the houses, their husbands, of course, are away and in many instances they exhibit their bitterness to our soldiers. Within fifty yards of where I am writing there is six young ladies…I have one of my guards posted at the house to prevent the soldiers from molesting them. On one occasion business took me to the house. They were not to be seen…they have the greatest contempt for us. In some case it is very different. Yesterday I rode to a house. The lady, a Mrs. Pickett, was polite and treated me very kindly. Her daughter was a pretty and interesting young lady and insisted upon my taking dinner with them which I did…a most excellent one it was…the hour…I spent at the house seemed almost like living a civilized life…they asked for my name, etc. and told me if I ever came this way again I must…call and see them. This is one case in a thousand. They are bitter & spiteful and were it not from fear they would treat us like so many dogs. They are worse than the men and have done much towards keeping up the rebellion if not more…most of the Regts are having dress parade. The bands are playing. What an elegant sight…Ira F. Gensel." The original stamped transmittal cover is included. Minor toning, else VG
