A good war-date Union army document, 1p. folio, "Head Quarters, Army of the Potomac, U. S. Military Telegraph, June 13, [1862] P. M.", issued to "Genl. E. D. Keyes commanding 4th Corps d' ramie", reading, in part: "It is reported that there is a considerable nubbier of stragglers belonging to your corps wending their way to the rear along the rail road. Their remarks, to a new regiment…were annoying to the officers and calculated to discourage the men. The commanding general views the evil…as one demanding your best efforts…guards will be fixed on the lines of communication…to prevent the passage to the rear of men straggling and deserting…men found straggling to the rear will be sent to the front to work at the construction of field defences…S. Williams, A. A. Genl…". Then, at the bottom a five-line response is included, in part: "…division commanders…will take the most stringent & immediate measures to ascertain the actual extent of the evil above referred to and to prevent its recurrence. By order of Brig. Genl. Keyes…". Signed and made official by Lt. Benjamin Browne Foster (1831-1903) who became brevet colonel of the 11th Maine Vols. Minor chips at the top margin, else VG
