A heart-felt war-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. folio, written by 1st Sgt. Francis W. Rush [died of Typhoid Fever within a year], Co. A, 56th New York (Tenth Legion) Volunteer's, Yorktown, Va., Dec. 10, 1862, concerning his brother's death [Sgt. Samuel D. Rush, 24 year's old at enlistment in 1861] from consumption at Newark, New Jersey Hospital on Nov. 28, 1862, reading, in part: "…I was very happy to hear that you had good luck in getting brother['s] remains home. O' that I could have been there to see him. I would be better satisfied…he was [is] not alive…god's will be done…I must not murmur for he [had] done all things for the best. You say he was such a pretty corpse, but sister he might of looked nice for a corpse but I could not thought so…I did not know how dear he was to me until after we had enlisted and the longer we was together the more I thought of him…little did I think when we parted it was the last time I was to see him…I wanted him to go long before he did…it seems as if it was to be so…in regard to the ring do not part with it and his watch…keep it for me…tell father he can go to Washington and get his pay…tell him to go to the doctor where he died…and get him to sign his descriptive list and then…he can…draw his back pay and bounty…I wish I was there so I could go with him…he will have to make [an] affidavit that he is same father…I have got a good many little things [be]longed to brother…I am afraid that I may loose some of them before I get a chance to come home, but I shall carry them as long as I can stand it…I beg of you to save me his watch…I received a letter from a young man at Newark Hospital concerning brother's watch…it was such a good letter that I took a liking to him…he is a good nice fellow…it was all for the best that god has taken our previous brother….F. W. Rush." Staining and minor paper loss, else VG.
