A sad Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Theodore P. Churchill, Co. A, 32nd Mass. Vols., [DOD Potomac Creek, Va.,12/14/62], Upton Hill, [Washington], Sept. 11, 1862 more sad news concerning his brother's death and disappearance during the battle of 2nd Bull Run, in part: "…we have been lying in camp here for nearly a week so that we have got recruited up some…the late marches which wore us down pretty well…she said you just heard that Fred was missing. He was wounded in the side by a piece of a shell. So the boys of his company told me…after the fight, but not badly they thought. [Pvt. John] Jordan [18th Mass. Vols.] is in Washington wounded and Rufus Rufus Wr[ight] [also 18th Mass.] is probably dead but I hope that he will be heard from soon…I saw Ed & Frank the other day. They [are] well…I was sorry to see them out here for it is killing work to moss anybody taking cols and sleeping outdoors…without shelter …folks at home cant realize how soldiers are used but there is no grumbling …the stars and stripes have floated over us through our long marches and may they ever float till this rebellion is crushed…good bye…T.
