War-date Union officer's letter, 3pp. 4to., written by 2nd Lt. Wallace McGrath, Co. K, 15th Ohio Vols., "Head Qurs. 6th Brigade, Camp near Nashville, Tenn., Dec. 10, 1862," in part: "…we have just changed camp…I do not know what it means for us to fall back…we have a strong line of defense. Maj. Genl. McCook last evening told Genl. Willich that the enemy had out flanked us on our right flank and that Genl. Kirby Smith of the Confederate Army was north of the Cumberland river and trying to cut off our railroad communications & supplies…the rebels that outflanked us…are bearing towards Fort Donelson and will gain possession of the Cumberland river…if they do the Army of the Cumberland will have to fall back towards Louisville again to get supplies…I do hope this Damned war will soon be over…Julia…will make you a good wife…Mary St. Clair…said that the man she was about to marry, she did not love…the one she had given her heart to was in the army and had probably lost it long before…down in the land of Dixie…Wallace McGrath."
