A rare Medal of Honor winner's war-date letter, 4pp. 8vo., 1st Sgt. Wilmon W. Blackmar, Co. K, 15th Penn. (Anderson Troop) Cavalry, Louisville, KY, July 8, 1863, to his father, in part: "…the gloom in which July began was certainly the black darkness preceding brightest day…the late Victory is of vital important…our boys…stand up before the Rebels and meet them in their chosen positions only to be shot down and mangled without mercy…but now t…the cloud has been swept away…the result…Meade's & Grant's official report…we have been expecting John [Hunt] Morgan at Louisville…I went to bed with a Springfield Rifle and a full cartridge box near my feet intending to join some organization for the defense of the city…about 12 P. M. we were roused by bells & cannon…I was sure Morgan was upon us. On reaching the streets we found them full of exciting rumors & citizens running to & fro. It…proved a false alarm and I was soon sound asleep again. Yesterday, one of the boys, who has been in the hospital…was married in New Albany, Ind. and I was an invited guest…after congratulating the bride, eating a good dinner…I returned to Lou.
