A rare Medal of Honor winner's war-date letter, 8pp. 8vo., 1st Sgt. Wilmon W. Blackmar, Co. K, 15th Penn. (Anderson Troop) Cavalry, Chattanooga, Tenn., Oct. 17, 1863, to his father, in part: "…I have always had enough to eat which is saying a great deal…my appetite is not slim…our poor horses are hard off…from one to three…died during the previous day…I sometimes send a man out on duty and he comes back with his saddle on his back and reports, "Sergt. my horse has gone up." Sometimes a man starts out on an old skeleton and comes back well mounted having "gobbled" a horse…Brig. Gen. [James A.] Garfield-chief of Rosy's staff was elected to Congress last fall and started for home…with 20 of our boys as escort…the Gen. is a great loss to the Department for he was every inch a man. The fighting parson being an Ex-Methodist minister and an excellent man. We hear with joy that Vallandingham is defeated by 60,000. The news comes by signals…I have no work on the entrenchments to do…my position as O. Sergt. frees me from many unpleasant night rides…my heart-the part of it devoted to Country-is exciting glad…that [Governor] Andy Curtin has carried Penn. by 50,000…rain…has raised the river very much and a raft of logs from our Butternut friends has knocked our pontoon bridge, but the two steamers captured…are fast being put in trim…we have two steam saw mills running night & day and the Regt. of [1st Mich.] Engineers & Mechanics are hard at work…our Regt. is now…in Sequatchie Valley…guarding passes in the Mts…Col. Palmer is Pro. Marshall…he is running a flour mill and boys & horses are getting fat…perhaps the Col. would send me some flour…Wilmon." Near fine.
