A rare Medal of Honor winner's war-date battle letter, 3pp. 4to., on "Office Commissary of Musters, 14 Army Corps," 1st Sgt. Wilmon W. Blackmar, Co. K, 15th Penn. (Anderson Troop) Cavalry, [Chattanooga, Tenn.], Nov. 24, 1863, to his mother, in part: "…I write tonight to let you know that I am safe…that a battle is raging here…Hooker's men have been doing some wonderful work today. They charged up an almost impassable mountain side and rove the enemy in fine style. I only hope he can hold what he has gained. It is one of the greatest things of the war. They are still fighting and it is quite late at night…we have lost terribly in numbers…you think, my dear mother, of men charging up the side of Ragged Mt. in Andover with a man & gun behind every rock and tree…you know it would be hard work to go up…our troops drove the enemy. We could see them come round the side bearing our dear old Flag, the enemy fleeing before them. The last dispatch from Hooker is that he has gained much ground and taken 2000 prisoners…at present we are in the best position and have gained important points…Wilmon." Near fine.
