War-date Union soldier Autograph Letter Signed by Benjamin Wright, 10th Connecticut Vols, 4pp. folio, Morris Island, South Carolina, July 27, 1863, and reads in part: “...Yesterday was Sunday...it was the toughest twenty four hours we ever did...we laid in rifle pits. Just after we got there at night the Rebs began to shell us from Fort Sumter and Cunnings Point Battery. Every fifteen minutes through the night would throw a shell over at us, so as to keep us from getting any sleep...soon after day light they opened on us from a battery they have been building up near the city, in which they have mounted some powerful mortars and rifle guns....you would have been amused to have seen how we hugged the ground...sometimes they would burst as many as six shells over our heads in a moment...[7/28 530am] Our great loss is Col. Leggett, and I think he lost his through carelessness, he exposed himself unnecessarily. He was feeling pretty well this morning...if any man could bring a Regt out of a tight place, Col Legget was the man that could do it...two of their guns were smashed all to pieces, another shell struck by the side of the ditch and buried the biggest part of it...covered Lieut Marshall, another one buried ten men so that they had to dig out...” Fine condition.
