A great war-date, ca. 1863, California letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by a certain Frank E. Glover, San Francisco, Cal., Sept. 16, [1863?], to "Mr. Freeman" updating him on conditions in the city, in part: "I have…become acquainted with the principle parts of the city. I would not advise you to come…for there is little chance for a situation here. There is lots of nice respectable young men here that…cant get no work nor…money to go back on. I pity a good many of them. I have spoken to a great many of them. They are…disheartened…a good many of them are enlisting. They are offering large Bounty's…they must have money…the trip is very pleasant from New York to San Francisco. I enjoyed it very much…I am going to leave here Monday…I don't know where I will stop…I am gig towards Oregon…the city is pretty large but is principle built of small frame houses, one story-high…built on a sand bank. The sand drifts.[onto] the side walks that you have to go out into the street…Sunday is not expected here. They have their stores open, horse races, a minstrel…to amuse the people. They have a fair here. It was open last Sunday...Frank E. Glover. Direct to San Francisco, California care of Mr. S. J. Black." Near fine.
