Good Union officer’s six page letter written by Colonel “R(obert” F. Taylor” who organized the 1st Veteran new York Cavalry in November 1863. Datelined Cumberland MD, July 11, 1864, to his wife, in part “... found myself in command of 300 infantry and 200 cavalry and a small train with orders from Gen’l. Hunter ... After remaining long enough in Stanton to obtain a considerable amount of stores we took a rather complicated route for Lynchburg ... we ran into a large body of the enemy being sent to surprise us... At noon we arrived at the point ordered by Gen’l Hunter to communicate with him ... we lay until next morning before moving except to capture a wagon train containing ...about $2,000,000 in Confederate money ... I lost 22 pounds .. from want of something to eat ...at Lexington where the Brave Stonewall Jackson body lies ...”
