Union soldier's letter, 3 1/2pp. 8vo., written by Sgt. Altus H. Jewel [WIA Fredericksburg, Va., May 3, 1863], Co. E, 77th New York Vols., "Camp near Strasburg, Va., Oct. 27, 1864," in part: "…I am as tough as a brick. We are now encamped near Strasburg…overlooking Fisher's Hill. Our Division is here. The rest of the army is encamped about a mile in rear [the] of us…the 19th Corps was packed up & in line…for marching. Some think that [they] are going to some other Department…Front Royal is about…ten miles from here. It is one of the gaps between the upper & lower Valley…there is artillery firing in the direction of Front Royal…you have…seen the account of the fight a week ago last Wednesday [battle of Cedar Creek, Virginia]. We captured 48 pieces of artillery & 300 wagons…of the prisoners…we got some 3 or 4 thousand. They captured 24 pieces from us in the morning, but we got them back in the afternoon. I have voted today & will send it to you…take off the first envelope, but you have no right to take off the inside envelope…give the inside envelope to the Board. If my name is not enrolled you will have to make out an affidavit that you know me &…that I am entitled to a vote. Anyone will make out the affidavit for you…A. H. Jewel." Minor spots, else VG
