War-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Robert Henry Greenfield, Co. I, 1st New York Dragoons, "Camp near Mitchell's Station, Va.," Feb. 9, 1864, to his wife, in part: "…I have been on a scout with our regiment. We crossed Rapidan River and had a little brush with the Rebs. Ren and George did not go nor Mite [Pvt. Milton Parker, Co. I, 1st New York Dragoons, DOD Washington 9/10/64 buried Arlington National Cemetery grave 13-8344]…the Captain said that I could go…we took some Rebel prisoners and some horses. We was gone…two days and one night. It was very muddy going…Cap. [James] Lemen [WIA Trevillian Station, Va., 6/11/64] is a good captain. He does not want his boys to go on duty when they are sick [but] some of them does…I think Ren is better than he was when he was home. He is fat and looks more rugged than he did when he first came but Bush, the poor fellow, stands with the pen in his hand and the tears in his eyes. He looks very homesick…he will find that there is some difference between soldiering and riding out with the girls…Robert H. Greenfield." VG
