Pielsburg” 3p. quarto, Hilton Head, August 27, 1865, and reads in part: “...I am still occupied under the Freedman’s Bureau, but have no very strong hold on the place....The south is not home to me though some things I like very much. I find only two months very uncomfortable by heat, June & July...This state is not yet reconstructed into a very loyal sister yet. You may have read some of the loyal speeches of the ‘Provisional Governor.’ and like pirest, like people. The bayonet part of the war is over, but the war for the rights of the people is but just begun. The rebels are in a dreadful state of mind. They hate the government and the negro...” VG.
