Partly-printed Document Signed, "Alfred S. Sewell" 1p. oblong octavo, April 17, 1865, Chicago, being an "Officer's Commission. " for Helen E. Watson who is appointed "Corporal in the Army of the American Eagle..." Vignetted spread Eagle printed in pink in the background.Small repairs, unusual document, else VG. The U.S. Sanitary Commission used the Army of the American Eagle, named after 'Old Abe' the 8th Wisconsin war eagle, to raise funds for sick and wounded soldiers at the Northwestern Sanitary Fair.
