War-date Union soldier Autograph Letter Signed by Erestus Chopin, 4pp. octavo, Camp Reserve Artillery, April 10, 1865, with cover addressed to his sister in New York, it reads in part: “...I must tell you the news...We went to bed last night all quiet in about half an hour we heard loud cheering the direction of the P.C in about an hour later assembly was blown & Major Breck came out in his shirt sleeves cap off & sayed the Gen had surrendered unconditionaly & there such cheering you never heard as there was for about ten minutes in fact it was kept up til midnight. Guns were fired...The major was so excited that he did not know how to act. He felt good all over & c flew around a spell then said that he couldn’t stand the pressure so he ordered his horse saddled & started fro the Pt. I expect there will be a great doing in York...I left off writing to go down to Broadway landing (on the Appomattox) to see the guns that were captured from the Rebs at Petersburg. There were about sixty of all likes & shapes...they have taken Old Jeff himself & that Lee has sent word to Johnston to Surrender his forces & also to Mobile from them to do the same...this bloody war is about wound up...” Fine condition.
