CHAPMAN, George (1832-1882) was an American sailor, newspaper editor, lawyer, and soldier. He served in the United States Navy during the Mexican–American War and as a Union Army general during the American Civil War. Later in life he was a judge and a state legislator. War-date Autograph Letter Signed “Geo. H. Chapman” 1pp. quarto, Headquarters 2d Cavalry Division, February 25, 1865, addressed to Brvt. Major Genl. Merritt, and reads “Ammunition requirements fully attended to rations and forage will be in hands of the men by sundown...” Fine condition.
