Henry Wilson (1812-1875) Grant's vice president who was born Jeremiah Jones Colbath, but indentured by his father to a neighbor at ten years old. He devoted his life to the abolition of slavery and founded the Free Soil Party in 1848, but joined the Republican Party in the mid 1850's. He served in the US Senate from Massachusetts during the Civil War, organized and commanded the 22nd Massachusetts Vols. for a brief period in 1862 and helped draft bills which opened the doors for the incorporation of African-American into the Federal army.
