Pair of modern sepia-tone prints, 9-¼" X 14-½", “Confederate Commanders” and “Union Commanders,” c. 1961, fine. The pair consists of a composite grouping of Confederate and Union leaders, none of whom had actually posed together for portraits. "Confederate Commanders" depicts, against a backdrop of a Victorian parlor complete with Confederate flag and portrait of A.S. Johnston, a seated Jefferson Davis near the center foreground, and standing about him left to right are Generals Hill, Hood, Stuart, Jackson, Lee, Longstreet (seated at table), Johnston and Beauregard. "Union Commanders" likewise shows an elaborate Victorian parlor, and below a grand rounded opening meant to suggest a triumphant arch is a seated Lincoln, surrounded by (left to right): Admiral David Farragut, General William T. Sherman, General George H. Thomas, General George G. Meade, President Ulysses S. Grant, General Joseph Hooker, General Philip H. Sheridan and General Winfield S. Hancock. Grant stands to Lincoln's left and appears in suit and tie rather than military uniform. In 1884 the Travelers Life and Accident Insurance Company of Hartford, Connecticut issued a pair of wet plate albumen prints in cabinet card and other formats. This enlarged facsimile likely was produced during the Civil War centennial period.
