Autgraph Letter Signed “Thos . Trueblood, Professor Emeritus of Speech, University of Michigan,” 1pp. quarto, January 11, 1944, Bradenton, Florida, with cover addressed to John Boos, it reads in part: “... His seven debates with Douglas for the Senatorship of Illinois are among the great triumpsh of American oratory. He won a majority of the popular votes but by the method of choosing Senators by the state legislature, Douglas was the choice by a bare majority. Though Lincoln lost the senatorship it was these speeches that gained him the Presidency. Many times I have visited Freeport, Illinois where Lincoln proclaimed what is known as the Freeport Doctrine in regard to the sprad of slavery...At the time of the Trent Affair when Mason and Slidel the Confederate Commissioners to England and France were taken off the English ship by the Union forces the excitement in England and America was so great that some members of Lincoln’s cabinet, notable Secretary Seward, wanted to declare war against England at once. Lincoln raised his hand and extended his great-palm toward the impulsive secretary and said firmly ‘One war at a time, Mr. Seward.’ Then, again, when, at the end of the war, some of his cabinet members wanted to hang a few of the Confederate leaders, Lincoln said with great empahsis: ‘Don’t hang ‘em, hang to ‘em.” Fine condition.
