War of 1812 date Autograph Letter Signed “John Manning” 3pp. quarto, Portland, Maine, December 30, 1814, with integral address to his father in Gloucester, Massachusetts, and reads in part: “...weeks had been passed with but very little change in my pocket dropping therefore all ideas of the gentlemen and hearing of an opportunity of going out in the Mammoth one of the safest privateers, I came on here and engaged as surgeon...I am now here and in a measure prepared for a cruise...” Fine condition.In 1814 the Privateer Mammoth took 18 prizes in 17 days.
