Two four page letters written by Albert S. Berger, each datelined Manila P.I., April 20, 1899. In part, “The ball is still rolling ... I have benn in the field about 20 days.. When we lay down the bullets whiz over our heads like birds ... There are about one thousand wounded in the hospital. These nxxxxxx are almost the same as Indians. I have seen a great deal of dead nxxxxxx. And I have helped to carry the wounded nxxxxxx. ... There were about 30 men out of 300 killed and wounded in 15 minutes ... I was in every fight the Company was in. ... I think if I get shot, its my time to die. ... I had a man fall 2 feet from me. ...” The second letter is a copy of a poem “Asleep in the Trenches’.
